The Ultralight Icelandic Eiderdown Duvet

Sustainably handcrafted to order in Iceland from 100% pure Icelandic eiderdown.

A lighter way to sleep

Some sleepers simply need less.

Ultralight was created for bedrooms where a traditional duvet can provide more warmth than needed.

At just 80 g/m², it is our lowest eiderdown fill, developed for warm sleepers, warmer climates and temperature-controlled bedrooms.

You still experience the softness and remarkable lightness of pure Icelandic eiderdown, simply with less insulation.

Recommended bedroom temperature: 22–24°C / 72–75°F

If you live somewhere warm but sleep with air conditioning, the right duvet depends on the temperature you keep at night, and whether you naturally sleep warm or cold. Set your bedroom temperature and we’ll suggest a starting fill.

How Ultralight Compares With Our Other Fill Weights

Choose from four fill weights based on your bedroom temperature, climate, and sleeping preferences.

  • Ultralight (80 g/m² | 72–75°F / 22–24°C): Our lightest option, perfect for hot sleepers, warm climates, and air-conditioned bedrooms.
  • Light (125 g/m² | 68–72°F / 20–22°C): Excellent for warm climates and sleepers who prefer lightweight comfort.
  • Medium (170 g/m² | 64–68°F / 18–20°C): Our most popular weight, ideal for temperate climates and year-round comfort.
  • Warm (225 g/m² | 61–64°F / 16–18°C): Perfect for chilly bedrooms, colder climates, and sleepers who need extra warmth.

Eiderdown naturally expands and contracts to help regulate warmth throughout the night. These temperature ranges are general guidelines. If you sleep hot, choose a lighter fill; if you tend to feel cold, choose a warmer one.

Not sure which to choose? Medium is our most versatile option for balanced, year-round comfort.

Sustainably Sourced from Wild Eider Ducks

Protected by the Icelandic government since 1847, Icelandic eider ducks enjoy the best of both worlds – freedom and protection. Along Iceland’s coast, we provide safe sanctuary from predators for the wild eider ducks that voluntarily return to nest each summer.

In return, we’re rewarded with a nestful of highly-prized eiderdown when the birds leave for the Arctic seas. No birds are harmed in the process. Eiderdown farming finds the perfect, symbiotic balance between bird and man.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Why is Eiderdown expensive?

Short answer? A combination of Eiderdown’s exceptional quality, unique physical properties, natural scarcity, the difficulty and labor-intensiveness of cultivation and production, and overall market demand!

Long answer...

Numerous factors influence the price of Eiderdown!

First, Eiderdown is uniquely sourced from wild eider ducks – a sea bird inhabiting the North Atlantic. Unlike commercially farmed geese, who sadly spend their short lives in complete captivity, eider ducks are wild and live for approximately 20 years. They spend 11 months of the year fishing in the icy waters of the North Atlantic, during which eiderdown is their insulating lifeline. Their longer lifespan and uniquely harsh environment have, over Millenia of evolution, meant that Eiderdown has adapted to be uniquely insulating but light, breathable, and temperature-regulating.

When eider ducks reach three years of age, they pair up for mating and return to land for a brief nesting season. Icelanders prepare sanctuaries to keep them safe while they incubate their eggs, during which the females shed a surprising amount of down.

When her ducklings hatch and are ready to leave the nest, local farmers carefully collect the down by hand, a tradition passed down for centuries. Cleaning is meticulous and done naturally without chemicals, preserving the down’s natural resilience and unmatched softness.

Eiderdown is also the rarest, most expensive down in the world, and for good reason. Only a few thousand kilograms are harvested worldwide each year, making it more expensive by weight than gold or platinum!

Learn more.

Why is eiderdown better than other duvet fillings?

The secret of Eiderdown’s superiority lies in the birds themselves.

Eider ducks live for up to 24 years, 80% of which they spend in Iceland’s cold seas and coasts. They endure harsh Arctic climates, and like trees strengthened by strong winds, these extreme environments enhance Eiderdown’s quality and unique physical properties.

This longer lifespan spent in the wild offers unique advantages:

  • Unmatched insulation - Eiderdown develops a uniquely interlocking, microscopic structure, trapping heat far better than any other natural type of down or natural material.
  • Soft and lightweight - Evolution developed Eiderdown to make it perfect for agile fishing in the icy-cold depths of the Atlantic, making it warm but surprisingly soft, light, and adaptable, and perfect for bedding
  • Temperature-regulating - Eiderdown adjusts to your body temperature, offering warmth in winter and breathability in summer.
  • Supple but resilient - Naturally elastic and self-clinging, eiderdown stays evenly distributed inside duvets and comforters without synthetic stabilizers.

Holding Eiderdown in your hand is magical; all you’ll feel is a glowing warmth – it weighs practically nothing. And when you stuff it into your fist and then release it, it’ll spring up to 10 times its volume.

Oh, and unlike other bird downs (goose or commercial duck down) which often involve cruel processes like live plucking, Eiderdown is 100% sustainable and animal-friendly – the birds voluntarily leave their down behind in their nests. No birds are harmed in the process!

The end result? A luxurious, cozy sleeping experience—all with a clean conscience.

How is Icelandic eiderdown better than other down?

Icelandic eiderdown is sourced from wild eider ducks. These ducks spend decades living mostly at sea, and the harsh environmental conditions of the Atlantic Ocean help them develop powerfully insulating, temperature-regulating, but soft, light down to survive.

Unlike other eiderdown, i is also sourced from the remotest corners of Iceland, one of the world’s wildest, purest, pristine environments. In the country’s remotest coastal fjords and islands, the air, water, and earth remain untouched by pollution.

Unlike other down, which may be mixed or chemically processed, our eiderdown is 100% natural, gently gathered by local farmers, and painstakingly hand-cleaned.

Finally, Icelandic government inspectors certify all of Icelandic Down’s eiderdown for authenticity and quality, ensuring every gram of down meets the highest standards.

How ethical or sustainable is eiderdown?

Unlike other bird down (goose or commercial duck down) which often involve cruel processes like live plucking or industrial farming, eiderdown is sustainable and animal-friendly. The eider ducks voluntarily leave their down behind when they abandon their nests. No birds are harmed in the process! In fact, they seem to quite like the company of humans.

Eiderdown is gathered by hand at eider farms across Iceland, while our bedding is handcrafted to order in Iceland. This preserves a centuries-old tradition while supporting both Icelandic eider farmers and local craftsmanship. This ensures that we maintain century-long traditions and support local economies while minimising our carbon footprint.

How do I know that the eiderdown is genuine?

You’ll receive a certificate with your order. This is an official document issued by a quality inspector appointed by the Icelandic government. They ensure that our eiderdown - and all eiderdown sold or exported from Iceland - is 100% pure, high-quality, and accurately weighed and labeled.

About Ultralight Icelandic Eiderdown Duvet

What is an Ultralight Icelandic Eiderdown Duvet?

It is our lowest-fill eiderdown duvet: 80 g/m² of pure Icelandic eiderdown, designed for bedrooms around 22–24°C / 72–75°F, warm sleepers and warm climates. It gives less insulation than our Light, Medium and Warm fills while keeping the softness and low weight of eiderdown.

What is the difference between Ultralight and Light?

Ultra-Light has 80 g/m² of eiderdown and suits bedrooms around 22–24°C / 72–75°F. Light has 125 g/m² and suits bedrooms around 20–22°C / 68–72°F. If you sleep warm or keep your bedroom relatively warm, start with Ultra-Light. If you like a little more warmth, choose Light on our Icelandic Eiderdown Duvet.

Is Ultralight the right fill for my bedroom temperature?

If your bedroom is usually 22–24°C / 72–75°F, yes. If it is cooler, one of our other fills will suit you better; use the fill finder above or compare all fills.

Is Ultralight suitable for hot sleepers?

Yes. It was created for people who need less insulation at night, and it is our recommended option for warm sleepers.

Can I use Ultralight in a warm climate?

Yes. What matters is the temperature inside your bedroom, not outside. If your bedroom is normally around 22–24°C / 72–75°F, Ultralight is our recommended starting point.

Is Ultralight suitable for the Middle East?

Yes. For customers in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and elsewhere in the Middle East, choose by your normal bedroom temperature. If your air-conditioned bedroom is around 22–24°C / 72–75°F, start with Ultralight.

Is Ultralight suitable for Singapore and Southeast Asia?

Yes. It suits air-conditioned bedrooms in Singapore and other warm, tropical parts of Southeast Asia. If you enjoy a duvet but find conventional down too warm, 80 g/m² gives a much lighter level of insulation.

Is Ultralight suitable for an air-conditioned bedroom?

Yes. If your air-conditioned bedroom stays around 22–24°C / 72–75°F, Ultra-Light is our recommended starting point.

Can I use Ultralight as a summer duvet?

Yes. It is an excellent choice for summer in Europe, North America and other temperate regions, especially if you sleep warm. For more on eiderdown in summer, read why eiderdown suits lightweight summer bedding.

Is 80 g/m² still enough eiderdown?

Ultralight is deliberately filled much more lightly than a traditional eiderdown duvet. It isn't meant to match our warmer fills; its purpose is to give the comfort and lightness of pure eiderdown in warmer sleeping conditions. The total amount of eiderdown depends on the size you choose.

Is Ultralight available in US Queen and King sizes?

Yes. Ultra-Light comes in US Queen, King and Oversized King, plus European and UK sizes. Your duvet can be made to your exact dimensions.

Products & Customization

Eiderdown duvet vs comforter - what's the difference?

There is no real difference - except in our product sizing. Both are down-filled blankets with baffle-box stitching. Duvet is the term used in the United Kingdom, Commonwealth countries and elsewhere. Comforter is used in the United States and Canada.

Learn more.

How many grams of eiderdown do your products contain?

This depends on two things - fill power and product dimension.

Click here for a full list of specifications for duvets and comforters.

Click here for a full list of specifications for pillows.

Feel free to contact Ragna for more information.

How are your products constructed?

Everything is custom-made to order, meaning we hold no stock. Our duvets and comforters are hand-stitched using a baffle-box technique. Cotton casings are filled with eiderdown then evenly spread between baffle boxes, keeping the spread even.

Pillows are simpler, and don't require baffle-boxing.

What are your product dimensions?

We have a huge range of dimensions for comforters and duvets, as well as pillows. We can also produce 100% custom product dimensions depending on your needs.

Click here for a list of dimensions for comforters and duvets, and here for pillows.

Which fill amount should I choose?

We offer three different “fills” — light, medium and warm. This determines how much eiderdown we put inside.

If you tend to get cold at night, then you should choose the warm option, which has plenty of eiderdown to keep you warm at night.

However, if you tend to feel hot at night, then you may want to consider the light option. It has less eiderdown. If you are familiar with the TOG rating, then these are the TOG numbers for our duvets/comforters:

Light: 6-7 Tog
Medium: 9-10.5 Tog
Warm: 12-14 Tog

If you don’t know which one to choose, then we recommend the medium option. It should work fine because eiderdown tends to adapt to your temperature by expanding when it’s cold and compressing when it’s warm.

We can also add custom fill amounts if you want more or less eiderdown.

For a full list of fill weights, click here for duvets/comforters, and here for pillows.

What if I want to adjust my bedding?

Returned products must be received by us within 60 days of the date of your purchase. You must bear the cost of shipping the product back to us. We’d be happy to make any adjustments to your order within this window.

Do you sell sheets, covers, or casings?

No, eiderdown is all we do.

Our recommendation: choose the covers that suit your home’s unique decor–and your personal preferences. Second, choose high-quality, natural fabrics. To fully enjoy Eiderdown’s extraordinary cloud-like softness, try to find covers that match its light nature.

How do I care for my eiderdown duvet/comforter/pillow?

Eiderdown bedding requires very little in terms of product care.

But to preserve the exceptional quality of your eiderdown bedding, we recommend the following:
uncheckedUse a high-quality cover - Cotton, silk, linen, or bamboo covers are all suitable. This will protect your duvet or comforter, keeping it clean and reducing the need for washing. You can wash your covers as you would your regular sheets.
uncheckedAir it out regularly – Eiderdown thrives on fresh air. Simply shaking it out and letting it breathe will maintain its loft and softness.
uncheckedWash when necessary – Unlike synthetic fillings, eiderdown doesn’t trap odors or bacteria, so it rarely needs washing. Washing can degrade the eiderdown’s physical properties if it is not done professionally (or properly!).

If washing is necessary:

Clean professionally: To ensure the down remains intact, we recommend washing your bedding with trusted professional cleaners. Ideally, this would be a company that specializes in or is experienced in cleaning down bedding.
Wash delicately: If washing at home, use a delicate cycle, down-specific detergent, and cold water.
Dry thoroughly: Down takes a long time to dry, and eiderdown takes even longer. Even after it feels dry to the touch, keep drying it using a low-heat tumble dryer until it fully expands (just like a down jacket).r guidelines:
